To solitaire Or Not to Diamond?

This, it seems is an actual question! I kid you not, ladies! A very dear friend, who shall remain nameless for fear that I might alienate his chances of finally looking the love of his life, was perched on my sofa, waxing lyrical about how difficult it is to meet the right woman. Casually he asks me, whilst staring blankly at the Astley Clarke web page that I have ever so subtly left open for my husband to accidentally see (a girls got to know how to direct!) "I mean, is a brilliant ring precisely that important?" I nearly choked on my celery! "What on earth do you mean? Of course, it's important! "Really"? He sighs. "Yes 'really'!" I exclaimed, "It's the symbol of promise that a gorgeous hereafter full of happiness lies ahead with the man who is giving it to you! Without that symbol, there is no security." I think to myself, no wonder he is still singular and sitting on my sofa. Still he presses supplementary "But, why a diamond, why not a ruby or a sapphire?"

This is not an entirely ridiculous question. Although I know fully the way in which the mere notion of a brilliant makes me feel, I am intrigued to know why that is. Why is it that when my gorgeous engagement ring catches the light, I get momentarily dazzled and feel a warm glow sweep over me? Would I have been as hypnotised if my husband had presented me with a remarkable cut emerald? Or would I have continued to hold my breath, waiting for the real prize...sorry I mean the "symbol of promise that a gorgeous hereafter full of happiness lies ahead"? To find out the acknowledge to this, I needed to head to London's Bond road (any excuse is good enough!).

Bridal Sets Rings

We all know that Diamonds have been used in engagement rings for centuries, precisely as far back as the 15th. What I didn't know was that it was DeBeers who came up with a marketing campaign in the early 1900's, setting the bar for the price of an engagement ring at three months' salary, in an effort to sell more diamonds, very, very clever. Mindful of this marketing ploy, I try to forget all my pre-conceived ideas and just take in each stone's private beauty. I asked the assistant to show me a selection of rings; emerald, sapphire, ruby and of course diamond. I also asked her to make them all of approximately the same size and shape. As she presents me with the Emerald I have a short intake of breath. It is beautiful! The green seems like it has been conveyable from a fairy tale and it makes me just want to dive in. The sapphire is next to arrive. It's a stunning, strong, approximately foreboding stone. When I put it on, I can precisely feel its strength. Now it is the turn of the ruby. This stone makes me smile instantly. I feel ever so slightly naughty wearing this, as though I want to go and drink champagne with Marilyn Monroe! I am having a lot of fun with these rings and I can feel myself becoming very, very attached... These are tough acts to follow. However, when the brilliant arrives, I am silenced. All my chatter is stopped in an instant. As I feel the coolness of the platinum slide up my finger, I never take my eyes off the sparkling stone. I am transfixed - conveyable to another world where nothing is ever bad, where only light and love exist.

It is said that the third finger on the left hand has the vena amoris or "vein of love" running right to the heart. If that is the case, for me the brilliant is the heartbeat of that love, worn on the surface for all to see. Either that or I am just a magpie who knows what she likes.
